If you compete at the international and/or national level, you can have your urine and/or blood tested anytime, anywhere by your IF, NADO or a Major Event Organising Committee. Specially trained and accredited doping control personnel carry out all tests.
Testing can be conducted in-competition and out-of-competition.
But Why Me?
In-competition you can be chosen by random selection, finishing position or by being targeted for a particular reason.
- Out-of-competition you may be tested anytime, anywhere and with no advance notice.
- If you are a minor or an athlete with a specific impairment,
- If you are a minor or an athlete with a specific disability,
you may require slight modifications to the sample collection procedure. You can discuss these modifications with the Doping Control Officer at the time of testing.
Stages of Doping Control
- Athlete Selection: You can be selected for doping control at any time and any place.
- Notification: A Doping Control Officer (DCO) or chaperone will notify you of your selection and outline your rights and responsibilities.
- Reporting to the Doping Control Station: You should report for your test immediately. The DCO may allow you to delay reporting - however only in certain circumstances.
- Sample Collection Equipment: You are give a choice of individually sealed collection equipment.
- Your Sample: You will be asked to provide a sample witnessed by a DCO or chaperone. you may additionally be asked to provide a blood sample.
- Volume of urine: A minimum 90ml is required for all samples.
- Splitting the Sample: Your sample will be split into an A and B bottle.
- Sealing the Samples: You will see the A and B bottles in accordance with the DCO's instructions.
- Measuring Specific Gravity: The DCO will measure the specific to ensure it is not too diluted to analyse.
- Completing your Doping Control Form: You have the right to provide comments regarding the conduct of your doping session. Be sure to confirm that all of the information is correct, including the sample code number. You will receive a copy of the doping control form.
- The Laboratory Process: All samples are sent to WADA accredited laboratories.
Requesting a Delay
There may be times where you would like to delay reporting to the Doping Control
Station (DCS). As an athletes you have the right to request for a delay for the
following reasons.
For an In-Competition Test you can request for a delay to:
- Participate in an medal ceremony
- Fulfil media commitments
- Compete in further competitions
- Perform a warm-down
- Obtain medical treatment
- Locate a representative and/or interpreter
Obtain photo identification - Any other exceptional circumstances which may be justified, and which shall
be documented
For an Out-of-Competition Test you can request for a delay to:
- Locate a representative
- Complete a training session
- Receive medical treatment
- To obtain photo identification
- Any other exceptional circumstances which may be justified, and which shall
be documented
Athletes' Rights and Responsibilities
During Doping Control, athletes have the following rights:
- be accompanied by a representative and/or interpreter of their choice
- request for a delay in reporting to the Doping Control Station for valid reasons
(see above) - ask for additional information about the sample-collection process
request modifications.
However, athletes have a responsibility to:
- always remain within direct observation of the DCP from the point of
notification by the DCP until the completion of the sample collection procedure - produce identification such as competition accreditation or a driver’s licence
comply with sample collection procedures - report immediately for a test, unless there are valid reasons for a delay (see
above).
